Hola Compadres! The bite keeps on keepin’ on down here on the East Cape amigos! We just finished up another pretty decent week of fishin’. Overall, we enjoyed yet another week of a great Yellowfin Tuna bite. Equally impressive, the Dorado bite picked up again and a bucketful of Wahoo were also landed. The billfish bite remained slow. Bait-wise, we’ve got Humboldt Squid, ballyhoo, mackerel and sardinas.
Environment-wise, we dodged a spinner this past week as Hurricane Frank looked like he may be heading our way here in Southern Baja before he finally petered out in the Pacific Ocean to the south-west of us. However, that was after Frank, then classified as a Tropical Storm, had caused heavy damage to southern mainland Mexico, even causing four deaths. It was after Frank wreaked havoc down south that the storm gained strength in reaching Category 1 Hurricane status off the coast of Mexico as it made its way north. The storm did stir things up a bit and had us more than a little nervous here on the East Cape. Also, the moon hit Full right toward the end of the reporting week (8/24).
In terms of what has actually been predicted this season in the Eastern Pacific by the National Hurricane Center, we’ve got a 75% chance of a below-normal season, a 20% chance of a normal season, and a 5% chance of an above-normal season. Further, the NHC predicts 4-8 hurricanes with 1-3 of them being considered major. What does all of that mean to us here on the East Cape? If it’s one thing I’ve learned is that weather, namely storms of the hurricane variety, are more than difficult to predict. Here is what we do know . . . . . we usually get hit by a spinner about every couple of years, sometimes more. We have not been hit hard in the East Cape-Los Cabos area for the past two years. We rarely go three years without a good blow. You do the math. However, we did have two near misses last year that would have done serious damage to this area as did occur in Puerto San Carlos, Cuidad de Constutucion, Muleje, and Santa Rosalia. My vote is that near misses that cause soiling of the britches shall be considered as direct hits for the purposes of predicting future occurrences. Anyhow, when all is said and done, these predictions are pretty much like opinions and you all know what they say about opinions right amigos? . . . . .
All things considered though, it’s a pretty fine time to find your backside in southern Baja! This is especially true give the fact that currently, there are no tropical depressions, tropical storms or hurricanes in the Eastern Pacific!
Before moving on to the guts of the Reel Scoop, it’s time for a shameless plug. It’s times like these that it’s very important to remember that . . . . . it’s my website and I’ll say what I want. Now, as most of you amigos know, I fish a lot of Zukers Lures with great success. That said, I am also partial to Bomboy Lures and I like to promote them every now and again as well. As for now, I’m simply reportin’ the facts.
Recently, I requested of my bueno amigo and Bomboy Lures rep, Zane Hinrichs, that he fashion me a custom “Mini G”. I specifically requested a Flying Fish (something with blue and white) as I’ve had some nice action with those colors, both with Dorado and Marlin. The fact is amigos, I asked for the lure at about the end of May and Zane delivered the lure promptly. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I have not had too many meaningful opportunities to fish the lure as I’ve been pretty busy smokin’ all the freaking Yellowfin Tuna that you amigos have been landing!
However, the crew of the “Extraction” out of Cabo San Lucas did manage to place an order with Sr. Hinrichs just in time for the East Cape Bisbee Tourney. Obviously endorsing my wise lure request, Zane recommended the very same Mini G of the Flying Fish variety. The result? Well amigos, in the past six weeks, Extraction anglers have landed the following notable fish: A 52.8 lb. Dorado during the East Cape Bisbee which paid out approx. $11,000, a 250 lb. Yellowfin Tuna landed out at the Gordo Banks, and a 70 lb. Wahoo! All on the same lure amigos! Of course, there’s been more action but those are the notables. Needless to say, I can’t wait to get mine wet. For a view of this beautiful lure check out this week’s gallery. Or for more info on Bomboy Lures, go to www.marlination.com. On to the guts of the Reel Scoop . . . . .
Once again starting with the HOT bite, the Yellowfin Tuna fishin’ is still off the charts. Anglers once again were able to generate an overall catch rate of well over 100%! It’s important to keep in mind that Hurricane Frank did stir things up a bit this past week and that did affect the overall numbers. As such, both charter and angler numbers were down, as well as the overall counts. Anyhow, anglers reported decent action to the south off Surjidero (1/2-1 mile), La Ribera (3-12 miles), Los Frailes (10 miles), Destiladeras (3-4 miles), and Vinorama (4-5 miles). A bit more action was reported to the north off Punta Pescadero (16 miles). Chunked squid, sardinas, cedar plugs and hoochies reportedly did the trick there.
The Dorado bite saw a jump in the numbers this past week as anglers were able to generate an overall catch rate of about 40%. Anglers reported some nice Dodo action mostly to the south off Surjidero (1/2–1 mile), La Ribera (4 miles), Los Cerritos (3 miles), and Destiladeras (2 miles), with more action being reported to the north off Punta Pescadero (5-6 miles). Sardinas, chunked squid and smaller trolling lured reportedly did the trick there.
Hoo loves you baby? The Wahoo bite picked up some which is always nice to see. Anglers landed a bucketful of Hoo with all of the action being reported to the south off Los Frailes (3-4 miles), El Faro (4 miles), and El Iman (2-4 miles). Rapalas reportedly did the trick there.
As for Billfish, there really wasn’t too much action this past week. Only a handful of Striped Marlin and a few Sailfish to report as the overall catch rate was only about 6%. As for Stripers, anglers reported limited action to the north off Punta Pescadero (12 miles), and El Cardonal (8 miles), and to the south off La Ribera (6 miles). Mackerel, ballyhoo and trolling lures did the trick there.
Regarding Sailfish, anglers reported very limited action to the north off Punta Pescadero (12 miles), and El Cardonal (12 miles). It was all about trolling lures there.
So amigos, that does it for another edition of Reel Scoop where we don’t just blow smoke. Until next time, take care and we hope you find your backside in southern Baja real soon!
Adios, God Bless America, and Viva Mexico,
Chris “Smokedoggydogg” Moyers
P.S. It's that time of year again amigos . . . . Are you ready for some Football? We will once again be hosting an online football pool and anyone interested can join in the fun. The pool is called SMOKEY'S PICKEM and is being hosted on a website called officefootballpool.com. The cost is $115 for the season. That's $5 per week (17 weeks / $85), a one time $10 admin fee, and $20 in the pot to be paid out at year's end to the top three players. Please note Smokey's Grill and Cantina makes NO MONEY for hosting the pool! It is also important to note that I, Smokedoggydogg, am a Player who is eligible to earn money but in the three previous years of hosting the pool, I have never won a weekly payout (Ouch)!
*Admin fee covers cost paid to hosting website, and postage and money orders regarding payouts, etc.
It's very easy to join and play. Here is how it works. You simply log on once a week from anywhere in the world and make your picks. You pick the winner of each game (including point spreads). You then assign each game a number between 1-16 (when there's 16 games), or 3-16 (once bye weeks begin). You want to assign the higher numbers to games you have most confidence in. If you win the game, you get the corresponding points. So, the winner is the highest scorer, not necessarily the player with the most wins. You can change your picks at any time prior to game time of first games played.
Players can also set autopick options in case they are unable to get to a computer to make their picks. Autopick options include Favorites, Underdogs, Home Teams, Road Teams, and Random. Players can also take advantage of professional game and team analysis on the site. Feel free to "Trash Talk" to other players too.
We pay winners out weekly. For Baja California Sur players, we pay out in cash at Smokey's. For Stateside players, payouts are usually money orders. Amount depends on number of players, i.e. 30 players = $150 weekly payout, 40 players = $200 weekly payout, 50 players = $250 weekly payout, etc.
Regarding the season-end jackpot, First Place earns 50%, Second Place earns 35%, and Third Place earns 15%. Again, total jackpot amount determined by number of players, i.e. 30 players = $600, 40 players = $800, 50 players = $1000,
Pool fees must be paid in full prior to first game of the season (Thurs., Sept. 9th)!
Remember, you do not have to be a professional gambler to play. In fact, my mother-in-law is usually good for a couple of wins per year and she usually just lets her grandchildren make her picks! You are welcome to invite any friends or aquaintances who may be interested in playing. To join, follow the instructions below. Pool Rules are posted within the pool itself but I'll post those again via a poolwide e-mail
